Fitness in the Technological Milieu
Throughout my life, computer or phone screen time has been dominant since technological society demands such. Therefore, my dad sought to fix the consequential physical inactivity to encourage my athletic interests. My preference for exercise consists of weight lifting and martial arts. The fact my dad is a physician with a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and an instructor of Tai Chi is my privilege. Every Tuesday and Thursday, my dad would take me to a university exercise gym, to lift weights and teach me and a classroom of students Tai Kwon Do. I worked from white to black belt like all his other students, but he was more stringent with me since I reflected his reputation. Brain over brawn was the family motto. Therefore, I could never defend myself physically when harassed by peers on school grounds. Consequently, developing a good sense of humor went a long way in high school, but having the reputation of being a black belt did too! Along with cognitive flexibility, physical flexibility is an asset too. I could do the splits both front to back and side to side, and controlled flying in the air kicks were easy. However, what I enjoyed most was sparing. The exercise of simultaneous strategy and analysis intrigued me. Sometimes we had a guest teacher of another martial art form which also increased my skills. But among other things, what peaks an adolescent interest more than food? The Tai Chi lessons my dad offered the community on Saturday mornings did not interest me, but I enjoyed eating the biscuits and gravy breakfast after class! However, I now appreciate the gentle art of Tai Chi. Thanks, Dad!
